Industrial designs

An industrial design is the design of an implement or a part of it. It is derived from the characteristics of the lines, contour, colours, form, texture or the materials used in the object itself or its decoration.

It is important to protect an industrial design well. You obtain the rights to an industrial design by having it registered in the industrial design register, in accordance with the Locarno-classification. By registering your design you can counteract imitations. You cannot act against imitators or counterfeiters if your design is not registered.

Industrial designs can be three-dimensional (e.g. furniture, appliances, etc.). Drawings are two-dimensional industrial designs. The combination of a drawing and an industrial design can also be protected, for example the drawing that is applied to a three-dimensional object, such as decoration on a vase. In this case, there is a question of two-dimensional decoration on a three-dimensional form.

A drawing or design is protected insofar as the drawing or design is new and has a unique character. You can verify whether your design is a new design by means of an industrial design search. You can monitor possible infringements of your design well by means of industrial design watching.
